Probationary period

A probationary period is an agreed opening stretch of employment, usually three to six months, during which performance and fit are formally reviewed and notice is normally shorter on both sides.

In practice

Probationary period in a real operation.

Definitions are easy. What matters is how the thing behaves in a real operation, and where it tends to go wrong.

What it looks like in a UK hospitality business

It is a contractual arrangement rather than a legal status: most employment rights apply from day one regardless, and the protections that depend on length of service accrue on their own timetable whether or not probation has ended. What it genuinely gives you is a scheduled, expected conversation at a point where both sides are still deciding, which is the part most hospitality operations never actually hold.

The mistake operators make

Treating it as a countdown that either expires silently or ends in a dismissal. Probation only works if somebody sits down with the new starter at week two, week six and the end of it, with specific feedback each time. A probation nobody mentions is just three months of hoping.
